Dallas doesn’t need a coastline to be a surf destination. It just needs Goodsurf Beach Club. Here you can ride real waves in a high-tech pool without the fear of drowning or sharks (take that, Hawaii). Refuel with citrusy shrimp ceviche and teriyaki chicken tacos, and replenish those lost fluids with hibiscus ranch waters.
Calling it a "yacht club" might be a stretch, but this place does sit on a big pond with a fountain and has all the feel of a lakeside boat bar—it just happens to be in Plano. The menu is appropriately nautical (crispy coconut shrimp, beer-battered fish tacos), and cocktails are served in tiki glasses shaped like sea creatures. Go ahead and sip pineapple margaritas from a puffer fish just like Poseidon intended.
With six sand volleyball courts and six pickleball courts, The Sandy Pickle is prime real estate for a memorable first date or a way to combine exercise and drinking with a group of friends. The bar’s tart palomas and cold beers make it even better, but the cheeseburgers and hot dogs loaded with sport pepper relish put it over the top.
Here’s the ol’ tiki bar inside a coffee shop inside a Half Price Books gag. Sip a cocktail made with three types of liquor, tropical juices, and nutty orgeat, and snack on crispy pork lumpia or a crunchy, cabbage-packed okonomiyaki with hangar steak. And maybe buy a book on your way out.
Barbecue is summery, but standing in line outside is not. When you want peppery brisket and sticky-sweet pork ribs without the wait, head to Terry Black’s. It has a massive indoor dining room and ice tubs full of beer to keep you cool. Remember: Though it might be frowned upon, there’s no explicit rule against sneaking a handful of ice cubes down your shirt.
Lee Harvey’s Dive-In is next door to a beloved dive bar, also called Lee Harvey’s. But it's only the dive-in version of Lee Harvey’s that lets you frolic in the water and lounge on sunny cabanas. Purchase a summer membership, or just buy a day pass, to access the 60’ x 30’ pool—bigger than most hotel pools—and float on a pink flamingo with a bubbly spritz in hand.
Combine Uchi with Franklin Barbecue and you get Loro, an Asian-Texan smokehouse where wedge salads are improved by brisket burnt ends, and pork ribs are bathed in a sweet chili glaze. Brave the wraparound patio with frozen drinks, because sometimes, the only cure to 100-degree heat is a gin-spiked brain freeze.
This patio bar is situated towards the southern end of the jogger-friendly Katy Trail, so you can stop for frosty schooners of cold beer and half-pound cheeseburgers at shaded picnic tables without even unlacing. Or you could just skip the jogging altogether and get straight to the drinking.
Hide from the sun at Ginger’s, a dark and moody underground cocktail bar with great drinks and absolutely no natural light. Cool down and get a little weird with drinks like the Fromage Noir, made with goat cheese-washed gin, and contemplate your next move—maybe dinner at the attached Sushi | Bar, or steak at Brass Ram next door. They’re both air-conditioned too.
This iconic dive bar serves an equally iconic corn dog, made even more notable because it’s only served after midnight. It’s hot, crunchy, and the perfect foil to a cold beer—domestic, obviously—and whatever Tom Petty song you just put on the jukebox.
